I have a FX55 San Diego which was running @ 56 c @ 100% load, I have removed the IHS and with nothing else changed the temps are now 45 c.
I thought there might be a gain but this has amazed me, should now be able to have more fun :o

I admire your courage in taking a knife to a £550 CPU, I wouldn't dare.
Nice result though

I'm very pleased slowly increasing the overclock it's going well but when the 1/2" tubing and barbs arrive I'm hoping for even more.
I had read somewhere Cathar had wrote that some of the HIS are convex and some concave and that his Storm blocks work better with the HIS off so that's what made me have a go.
I was a little nervous but the other guys who did it first are the real ones with the bottle, it's always much easier for people like me to copy.
I'm going to mod my DDC today like Coolmiester has with the 1/2" inlet, again he's made it easy for me even put intructions of how to do it.
I'll let you know how it goes. :-))

could some1 put up a link or just do a guide for how to remove the heat spreader. i see the obvious advantage of using one with air cooling, but with water cooling [esp with a block like a tdx which has a small area designed to do most of the cooling] i can't see much point, it is another thermal barrier that will just get in the way. just a thought though.

my thread on the old website showed and detailed how to do it :(
I got exactly same result as the user above and higher stable oc :) some on the DFI forums highly recommend it for dual core cpu's!

I used a wilkinson razor blade - u know - the REALLY sharp stuff - for men only :P
be careful not to insert the blade in too much - i've seen pics of a REALLY bad job - will try to find the link as this one site covers all the pros and cons of doing it....
If you notice - my core was COVERED in thermal paste - when the IHS is off - you only need to put a iccle amount of paste back on between your CPU core and block/hsf..

I'm thining that this could be why my mates P4 died after he put a pelt on it... a little bit of moisture under the heat spreader?
Am gonna pull one off an old P4 3.0 thats blown to have a look, then I might do the same to my gaming machine to see what the results are like.

ooooh - BEFORE you decide to hack your chip and lose your warranty please check out the burn-in process first - here a gud linky
CPU BURN (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=382751&highlight=cpu+burn)
FOUND IT!
heres teh uber linky to teh best guide I could find for removing the IHS from a A64 IHS guide (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=59068&highlight=IHS+remove)
And as was stated before the following disclaimer is a must:
Neither coolercases, I or the websites these links are on are to be held responsibile for you haxoring your cpu, this is done entirely at your own risk.
My recommendations are that if your CPU has high temps all the time like I used to i.e idling @48 load@55-60 @ 2.5 - (I am now running 2.6 @ 34/45!) - then its worthwile doing - otherwise dont! - as its only reduction of temps that allow higher clocks.....try the CPU burn method first
The only reason AMD gives us the IHS is because peeps managed to damage the cores (chip the chip in the middle of the CPU) - so be careful when mounting your HSF/block back onto a IHS-less cpu......have fun.....

I've also heard you can lap the IHS to the bear copper (obviously removing it first :P ) Not sure if there's any difference between the two methods.

I might try this with my current CPU (3500+) when i get round to upgrading.
Will there be any damage to the mobo if anything goes wrong?
