Now wtf is wrong?! The guy who I got it off said that it easily does 2.66GHz on stock volts.
I got it through yesterday and it won't boot if I put the FSB over 240.
I have the mem timings at 2.5-6-6-7, DDR400 and DDR266. It won't boot on any of those.
CPU multi is set to x9.0 and the HTT is set at x0.3 and x0.4.
Now I cannot for the life of me work out why it won't go over 240FSB.
Any ideas? :|
Spec is-
ASUS A8N SLi Deluxe
BFG GeForce 7800GT OC
Opteron 144- CABNE 0545BPMW
Hiper Type R 580w
2x1GB OCZ RAM.
More voltage?
Is it unlocked (dunno if its easy/possible for the Optys)?
if so tryed changing the Multi?
eh i dunno, im no expert, prolly best to wait for someone with more knowledge to post

I've tried more volts. It doesn't work. And no, the chip is locked.

You shold be able to lower the multi on all Opterons, but not rase it. Overclocking is not guarenteed, and will vary from system to system. Even the same spec system could give different results.
What board was that guy using to OC? Asus are good but not the best OC boards.
Have you lowered the HTT bus multi to say 4 or 3? Always keep it below 1000MHz ie 5 < 200htt 4 < 250 etc
Could your ram crapping out on you not the cpu? Not sure if your ram can take 240MHz try a divider if your not already or more ram volts.
Do you have so called evidance that it can do 2.66GHz? He could have been lying.

the fsb has nothing to do with the cpu itself. when you increase the fsb you essentially increase the ram speed. the ram speed multiplied by the cpu multiplier will giveyou the cpu speed.
if your ram cant take the overclock then obviously you cannot increase the fsb alot. try relaxing the timings a bit and increase the fsb then.
have a look at the overclocking guide in the guides section for more info.

Mines running 2.6,stock volts no problem.

have you locked the pci buses?

Might be the mobo.. my A8N SLI Deluxe wouldn't go above 240FSB at normal multi. Although it would reach 300 if I lowered the multi...
He might have been running it on a DFI or something with very fast ram. Try lowering your ram to 3-3-3-8 or something and see if that helps.... if you have good cooling then you should be able to turn the volts on cpu/chipset/ram to max without causing any undue damage... just make sure you have good airflow and a decent cpu cooler.

I have the same setup A8N -SLI deluxe opteron 144 CAB2E and 2Gb OCZ gold xtc and my multi is standard at x9 memory voltage 2.6 volts and motherboards at 1.45 volts and to overclock i just raised my FSB to 289 which gives me 2.6mhz stable, it probably will go higher but i have not tried anymore yet as i am happy with my 700mhz overclock.
I would suggest its your ram holding you back as sardis says.
