nice!!!!
To me it just looks like they've added more bulk to an already over bulked OS, DX10 and WinFS are the only real advancements to the Windows Vista. WinFS they decided to remove from all releases (cause its not gonna be ready in time). Everything else is just aesthetics. Saying that they _MAY_ have made some interesting UI changes, but I havnt heard anything; anyway all this ranting is very hypocritical and self assuming of me... I had better download it so that I can get a solid foundation for my accusations.

ill take novell suse linux xgl interface any time of the day over this shit. for those who dont know what a desktop should be like have a look here
http://www.novell.com/products/desktop/preview.html
dont forget to have a look at the video.
MS is owned before they even finished the product.
and let not go deeper into the shit they have done ie dropping openGL support. kiss doom 3 engine games goodbye. and lets not forget that openGL 2.0 is still more powerful than DX10.

linux, yet it looks like a windows skin, so they just ripped ms :)

string rant =
what looks like windows skin? the gnome gui or the xgl effects?
vista with all the "superior" technologies cant do a wobble effect when you drag the windows. neither can it do transparent video playback. and all that for free.
and now that ms decided to support linux they also decided to drop OpenGL support. so now opengl will run in emulation mode which will kill performance. anybody still plays classics like quake 3? kiss them goodbye with vista.
System.out.println(rant)
thats bad java programming.

Lets face it, Vista is crap! I'm sticking with WinXP Pro until:
A: Somehow a free copy falls from the sky into my lap
B: I get Linux Distro that can play all my games
Until then, I ain't touching M$ Vista crap lol

And if you read the topic it is a free beta edition.

Yes I have. I had it running on another PC. It's a complete load of s**t bloatware tbh.

ok be very careful here cause if you edit it wrong you wont be able to boot.
first of all, here is a related article on boot.ini configuration
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=289022
second, my boot.ini looks like this
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
thats all the info in my boot.ini. i think this is pretty much a standard boot.ini for computers with one partition on the OS boot disk.
becareful and make a system recovery floppy or at least a good backup of your stuff. let us know how it went.
clocker
21-06-2006, 01:39 PM
Vista does not use a boot.ini and when you installed it you borked your "legacy OS's" version.
If you're going to play with Vista you really need VistabootPRO (http://www.pro-networks.org/vistabootpro/).
It's the easiest way to edit the new Vista bootloader- you can even remove it completely should you want.
I'm triple booting Sprocket right now...64 bit XP Pro and both versions (32 and 64 bit) of Vista.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/clocker/bootscreen.jpg
For beta products they are surprisingly capable.
After a rather lengthly install (@45 minutes) both versions hit the desktop with almost all drivers in place (except for my X-Fi sound...I got it kinda working in 32 bit but not at all in 64) and were internet ready with no setup at all.
The GUI is oddly alluring...windows fade in and out as they open/close and there are no annoying "blank screens" as Windows tries to figure out who should be writing to that now vacant area.
Many programs work OK in compatability mode.
Next I'm going to try rebuilding my RAID array...I understand that the floppy/F6 dance is over and RAID drivers can be loaded from a thumb drive..we'll see.
If you're interested in trying Vista I'd recommend you order the disks from MS direct.
Mine came in four days(!), cost only $10 and purchasing them (you get both versions) qualifies you for a free upgrade to RC1 when it arrives.
I don't really understand the incessant bitching about Vista...MS is giving it away for a year and it's clearly labeled as a beta release..what do you want?
Is it resource intensive? Yes, but that's why I built a nice PC...if Vista uses 500megs of RAM what do I care, I've got two gigs to play with.
Just like racing, I think the operative statement is "You gots to pay to play"...either bite the bullet and pony up or leave the track.
f.sardis
21-06-2006, 03:31 PM
i agree with you clocker in most points you make but i dont think you have understood the reason i am bitching.
having seen xgl in action on suse linux on my mates machine which is a lowly 512mb ram 1.4ghz pentium-m with 128mb 5650 mobile gpu, i do not appreciate what MS has done with Vista and i was expecting alot better. apparently vista is still stuck on a single desktop and has so high demands from the gpu even though you dont actively see 3D effects such as window tilting, wobbling, cubic desktop like in xgl and many more. for a system that requires a high end gpu in order to run properly the lack of those features is unnacceptable in 2006. also, keep in mind that most people who want to buy a cheap pc in order to do their work, will not give lots of money for a gpu so that can enjoy some "advanced" features that in our era should be considered standard. of course, to be fair we have to admit that beta versions are hardly ever optimised and MS has shown us with other beta releases that the final product usually has lower memory demand. for win XP alone the beta needed 100mb more ram than the final product. it is still early to bitch about non optimised code but thats hardly what i am complaining about. i complain about the features that are missing in favor of some eye candy of questionable usability.
clocker
21-06-2006, 04:09 PM
Well I've seen screenshots of some of the features you mention (specifically the window tilting) but can figure out how to enable them...assuming it's even possible with this release.
It's early days yet though, hopefully the goodies will start to appear soon.
f.sardis
21-06-2006, 04:16 PM
lol, the window tilting to the side you mean?
thats the new version of alt+tab. it shows the windows like that so you can have a preview of what you are switching to.
as for the goodies that you hope to see, i think it wont happen. infact they are actually removing features in order to meet the january deadline. over 100 features have been removed. the latest victim was the P2P service built in the OS.

i dont think it will be crap compared to xp. it is definitely a step forward. but for a next gen OS it just leaves too much to be desired.

Ummmm Clocker sorry to break the bubble dude , but i would hardly call my system uncapable, i would call its more of a case of alot of my music software is not working and that aint good as i am a dj/producer.

So have you complained to your software manufacturer about not producing a Vista patch yet?
Other companies got off their asses already, why not yours?

your right there ! i mean it would be well cool to have vista as a main os for the moment , but i cant see that happening for a while , the software i use is . reason , logic , cubase , ableton , soundforge.
thats alot to ask for i mean there is a fair sized list there.
not only that i aint found a good antivirus program for vista atm, so i will wait a bit to test and use.

16-10-2006, 12:56 AM
will it run counter strike source?
zoomee
18-10-2006, 03:19 PM
yes it will run CSS but its awfully choppy due to crappy driver support (saying that nvidia released they're new beta driver for RC2 today - get it from nvid.com) oh and theres still no SLi support
With regards to dual-booting etc - I didnt have to do anything - I had one partition free - and WinXP64 setup on the other - after installing RC2 - it automatically asks which OS I want to boot to (no editing any files etc.). The wierd thing I noticed (which may also be a gud ting) is that when I boot from OS1 - it changes that partition to my C drive - when I boot from partition2 it changes that one to C drive!.
Overall its a nice OS - I have my reservations about the Aero Glass thingy - its awfully resource hungry - I hope MS optimise it further - The coolest bit is when you try to ALT+TAB - try windows+TAB instead.
Up until the new nvid driver there was no OpenGL support either. Had no major problems except system stops responding in messenger when typing a message (but comes back to life and registers my key clicks after a couple of seconds) - laaaaaaag! ;)
gunna try Wolf:ET on it tonight - fingers crossed....
