View Full Version : SKY + boxes and what options i have?

Hi dudes,
Ok, since sky + plus has been out i have had 6 new boxes, 5 of which i had to pay for, becuase they all broke. i bet sky have some sort of comm. with the box and tell it to stop working after around a year. when i have had to pay £65 for someone to come and replace the box, with only 3 month warranty on the replacement.
Not anymore. i am fed up of giving sky money. What options do i have apart from spending another £65 a year of a replacement box?
p.s. if any of you guys have had the same problem let me know.

you know thats similar to what happend to my step dad, he had a box for a year didn't get the product cover, and then after about 2 months it packed up, he had to purchase a new one, bet that'll stop working as well in about 8 months just about the time he'll have had it a year

you could build a htpc with a satellite card in it, or go back to a regular sky box and get a tv card with an ir blaster feature (I think its hauppage iirc) so it can change the channels and record for you.
the only other things I can think of all require you to own a working sky + box and they interact with it, so not of much help really.
htpc is probably the best way to go.

My Sky+ has lasted over 2 years of continual use with no trouble, until now. Their new systems of being able to text or go online to set your Sky+ to record is quite innovative and handy.
You know a similar thing happend to me, i had a one year warrenty with mine, used it for 14 months and well it just stopped working one morning. Whats worse i cant open the blasted thing to tinker away inside and see whats "supposably" playing up. Heres a conspiracy going on im telling you. These things are designed to play dead after a short time, it must be programable.

ye, the sky + box only works when it is connected the a phone line, so after a certain period they must just deactivate it or something through the phone line. its only the recording feature that doesn't work. i can still use it to watch tv. just the playback and pause ect features are broken.
