Any runners on here, reason i ask is that i am trying to gage my progress as since going to the gym the last three months my best effort is 6.46 miles in 65 minutes which works out roughly 10 minutes a mile is this about average or am i to slow ? :D

for such a small distance its a rather long time. you should be doing about 5 mins a mile for such distance. i have finished the london marathon in 5h 45mins which is roughtly 13 mins a mile and thats including the huge traffic jam at the start line that held me back and also a horrible cramp at the docklands that kept my legs in the lovely hands of a charming nurse for about 30 mins
you need to speed up. your aim is 5 to 7 mins a mile for 6 miles with only 5 min pause between mile runs. as you progress reduce the mile time and the pause time. as you increase the total distance you should pace yourself. always try to do small sprints. the speed bursts increase your metabolism and make your heart and lungs stronger.after a speed burst dont go to walking speed. try to maintain the original mile run speed after it.
i guess its all fun and games till you get bored and start smoking one day like i did...

Thanks i have been given this advice once before but was not sure how relevant it was but i am aiming to certainly speed up, but as a beginner i do not think its too bad seeing as a few months back i could not run up the stairs without being out of breath, also no fear of me smoking as i gave up 8 years ago after smoking for 14 years also bear in mind i am creeping up to the big 40 so youth is not on my side.

:D

bloody hell. i thought you were teenager or around 20ies. in your case then you are doing just fine. you can bring it down to 7 mins a mile though. good thing you quit smoking. hope to see you in the next marathon. you have plenty of time to get fit for it. usually people prepare for 6 months.

Lol  afraid not mate i will be 40 in March so yeah considering my age and i am not a natural athlete by any means i am probably doing ok, not sure on the marathon though i might try the local half marathon which is 13 miles i believe i could probably manage that. ;)

i would take it alot slower than normall. especialy as you smoked, because you have a huge risk of your heart getting really pissed off.

very gradually decrease the times ect. don't have a day where you think you'll give it everything to see what your quickest time is.

Being of a similar age to ghost and in an attempt to get more exercise i bought a peddly bike earlier this year and was hoping to do the C2C around about now but it soon became apparent that though the mind was willing and able the body wasn't

Having said that its great fleeing around the countryside but more realistically for me i think it will be next year for the C2C

I do not intend to go mad anyway i am not out to break any records ( not that i could ) but just to get fit really and drop a few more pounds :)

As paul said the mind has good intentions but sometimes the limbs say no  luckily though i have a vast expanse of lakes bridleways and hills behind my house on which to run on also whichs helps as well as the bike.
